Afterwards, as the little hamlet burned to the ground, Celo identity was revealed. Instead of mocking him with abuse due to his previous trespasses against King and country, the villagers welcomed the mighty Celo with open arms, giving him a sword left by an unknown knight from years past in order to travel East to not only alleviate himself of his own guilt, but to avenge the villagers by hunting down the fleeing Bestia. Rachul, warrior-princess of Bassett, was a strange juxtaposition, she didn’t feel like royalty, but she knew that she was a warrior, she wanted love, but couldn’t keep it and now she had a terrible secret, one that she longed to expose to the world, but was too frightened to speak its truth aloud. So she entered a tournament held by the Duke of Manti and defeated everyone, including his nephew, Garrison. A featureless black entity ruthlessly killed the remaining villagers in search of Celo and stalked off to the east, following the knights tracks in the snow… They sat on a wide patio overlooking the gardens inside the castle keep. Straight-backed servants laid out a light breakfast of pastry, eggs and warm cider before them. A warm breeze brought the fragrance of the various flowers to Rachul’s nose and she allowed herself to relax a bit. “It is an unexpected pleasure to have the Princess of Bassett in my humble court,” Duke Pravus said in his charming way. Garrison, who sat nearby was clearly uncomfortable with his uncle’s pomp and circumstance as well as the fresh bath he must certainly have been forced to take at this early hour. He grunted and shoveled eggs into his mouth. “Thank you, sire. My parents send their best wishes to you and your subjects.” Pravus nodded gratefully. “My lord?” Rachul asked. “Is it true that you fought with my father in the Great War?” “Aye, that was a glorious time. We cleansed lands the world over of their tyrants and evil overlords. We put those who dealt in the black arts to the stake. We founded new governments, wrote fair and just laws, why if it wasn’t for men like your father and I, the Draconian Council of Elders would not exist today.” To Rachul, Pravus sounded like a politician reciting some generally accepted notion from memory, what his real thoughts on the subject however were seemed to be kept close to the chest. “The council, my father took me their once. I remember being frightened of all those old men.” Pravus chuckled, “Those old men make our laws, they keep our kings and queens honest, they punish those who would harm good people and . . . yes it is a little intimidating to be in their presence. And I’m sure very scary for a young girl.” “My lord, did you fight alongside a knight named, Caelum,” Rachul asked. “Caelum, yes I remember him. A fine warrior.” “You must help me my liege, I need to find him.” “Caelum? Oh he must surely be dead, my dear.” “Dead? No, he can’t be. You don’t understand.” Rachul said allowing despair to creep into her voice. It was sound she did not like at all. “I’m sorry, but the last I heard tell of Caelum, he had gone mad.” Rachul stared out over the gardens and she was afraid she might cry. She tried desperately to choke back her tears. “Perhaps, no it was so long ago.” Rachul looked at Pravus hard, “Perhaps what?” “I had heard tell that Caelum appeared up north, near the docks of Frigus.” “Thank you, my lord. If you’ll excuse me, I must leave immediately.” “May I ask why you are in search of this knight?” “I have done great services for your lands, have I not?” Rachul said, standing. “You have, my dear and my people will always be grateful to you. Do they not still call you Bellona, goddess of war?” “They do, my lord so please forgive me when I say that this quest is personal to me. That I must know its true purpose alone.” “I see. Then grant me one boon and you may be on your way.” “As always, ask what you will of me sire.” “I ask only that you take my nephew with you.” Garrison looked up from his ale, “Sire?” “You have never traveled to the Ice Lands have you?” “No, I haven’t.” Rachul replied. “It is a dangerous place, far outside the control and protection of the Council. I would that you take Garrison with you on your journey. You need not tell him its purpose, only let him lend you his sword.” Rachul nodded her consent. “Be off then my dear Rachul and please, be safe.” “Thank you, my lord.” Rachul excused herself and left the patio. Pravus looked out over the gardens and exhaled. “Uncle!?!” Garrison spat angrily. Pravus turned his head toward his nephew and gave him a look of utter contempt, “Watch her, Garrison and if she finds Caelum, . . . kill them both.” <<>> <<>> He had been following Celo’s footprints through the snow for two days until they came out from under the shadows of the mountain peaks. The warm sun felt strange on his pale gray skin, for he had rid himself of his cumbersome fur coverings as the temperature increased. Now he was tracking the knight by scent, but it seemed he had come this way before. Yes, he remembered passing this same gnarled tree on this same little green knoll. He stopped under the sporadic shade of the twisted limbs and looked out on the valley beyond. Celo was out of sight. Suddenly someone crashed down on him from above and mashed his face into the soft earth. “Who are you?” the voice hissed into his ear. “Nail I am.” “And why are you following that knight?” “Village mine he came.” “And . . .?” “Bestia my keeper kill.” “Keeper?” “Keeper, yes, brother mine.” “Your brother was killed by the Bestia?” “Aye.” “So why are you following that knight, Nail?” “Kill Bestia I.” “Are you a warrior?” “No me, learn I want, kill I want, miss brother mine.” Nail was let up by the man behind him and as he turned around a huge grin spread across his gray hairless face, “Great Celo the!” Celo measured the lanky man in front of him. His skin was a gray as an overcast sky and there was not one hair visible on his body. The tall man’s limbs were packed with thick-corded muscles that more than likely betrayed an incredible strength. Nail’s expression and demeanor though was that of a child. “Where I’m going, you shouldn’t follow.” “Strong I am!” Celo smiled, “I’m sure you are, but the Bestia are dangerous, they’ll kill me as easily as they will you.” “Die I would,” Nail said with conviction. “Beside great Celo the, brother mine for I die too.” “I’m sure you would.” “Me you teach, Celo.” “To fight?” “Aye!” Celo looked across the valley and considered this a moment, “No, there is already too much blood on my hands, I won’t add yours.” Nail put his huge hand on Celo’s shoulder, “No blood. Mine blood on hands, not yours.” Celo looked up at him, “You don’t have a weapon.” Nail grinned from ear to ear, “Weapons I have everywhere.” The tall man stooped down and picked up a hand full of rocks. “Watch you.” Nail smoothed the stone with his thumb and forefinger while licking his lips. Celo watched in silence as the gray shadow next to him tracked something in the grassy valley below. Suddenly the stone flew in a blur toward some unseen target. Nail shrieked in delight and raced off down the hillside. Celo caught up to him just as Nail was raising a dead snake in one big gray hand. “Great Celo the hungry?” Celo smiled in spite of himself. “You’ll make a fine squire, Nail.” Nail’s wide jaw dropped open, “Squire Nail the!?!” Celo nodded, “Aye, Nail the squire. Now, let’s eat.” “Eat let’s, aye!” <<>> <<>> Pravus looked out over his gardens and wasn’t sure how to feel. Rachul had served his people well as a knight-errant and clearly was of more knightly prowess than most men of arms in all the lands. What would her father, the King of Bassett think of his treason? Certainly his old friend would understand that some sacrifices would have to be made in order to keep the peace. What was the life of one woman compared to that of those in the known world? It was a small price to pay. Besides, if anyone would find glory down this path, it would be Pravus himself! He spoke to the two shadows standing behind him without turning around, “My nephew will take care of everything.” “If he doesn’t,” one of the things growled. “We will,” the other whispered. The two black ghosts rushed past him and leapt off the balcony, disappearing into the gardens below.
